Our Story

Gypset Cargo is more than a lighting brand—it’s a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and soulful design, shaped by the creative journey of founder Jillian Middleton.

Raised on a family farm near Orange, New South Wales, Jillian’s early life was immersed in the handmade. Her mother and grandmother instilled in her a deep appreciation for artisanal quality, from hand-sewn garments to bespoke homewares. This foundation sparked Jillian’s passion for design, leading her to pursue formal studies in interior design and gain experience with esteemed firms in Sydney.

In the mid-1990s, Jillian established her own interior design practice in Sydney's vibrant Oxford Street. Her pursuit of creative growth took her to New York City, where she transitioned into styling, collaborating with renowned publications like The New York Times Magazine and Elle Décor. These experiences broadened her design perspective, blending urban sophistication with her rural roots.

Upon returning to Australia, Jillian sought a deeper connection to nature and creativity, leading her to Byron Bay. There, she founded Gypset Cargo in 2009, driven by a desire to create lighting pieces that were artistic, three-dimensional, and original—distinct from mass-produced designs.

Gypset Cargo's collections draw inspiration from the Australian coastal landscape, featuring natural materials like bamboo, rattan, wooden beads, iron, and brass. Each piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans, embodying a relaxed elegance that resonates with both local and international audiences.

From humble beginnings to a brand synonymous with coastal chic, Gypset Cargo reflects Jillian Middleton's journey—a fusion of heritage, global experience, and a commitment to authentic, soulful design.
